Arturo D. Smith is a British-Venezuelan cinematographer and scholar who has been educated and worked internationally for twenty-five years. His work has primarily been as a Director of Photography, pioneering new technologies in the field of experimental and digital cinematography. With over twenty feature-length movies to his credit and hundreds of commercials, he has collaborated with directors such as Spike Jonze, Michel Gondry, Susan Streitfeld, Siraj Jhaveri, and Gregg Araki.
In addition, Arturo has shot over two hundred commercials for companies as varied as Audi, Mercedes, Siemens, Ford, HBO, Johnson & Johnson, Christian Dior, and Samsung. His films have been screened or nominated at international film festivals such as Berlin, Sundance, Venice, Montreal, Cannes, and Toronto. He has also worked with renowned artists such as Prince, Michael Jackson, and Marilyn Manson, as well as numerous actors.
The film project Nowhere (2024), in which Arturo served as Director of Photography, was most recently inducted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Criterion Collection.
In January 2019, Arturo was appointed Associate Professor of Film and TV Arts at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University but left academia in 2021 to continue research in the field of virtual production. He is currently working on systems integration processes to be implemented in Los Angeles on several projects. Additionally, Arturo is collaborating with Nickson Fong on the LIVE LENS project, an AI hybrid company that is in production on several film projects.
