While in his 20s, Joe played lead guitar and bass with several U.S. bands, including Rocking Horse, the John Rees Quartet, and The Fog, often opening for acts like Blue Öyster Cult, Uriah Heep, and Edgar Winter’s White Trash. He also worked on American studio sessions, composing music for band demos, TV jingles, and radio commercials.
After moving to Thailand, Joe pursued travel writing while continuing to produce and perform music. In 2005, he co-founded The Tonic Rays, whose album made the Billboard Critics and Village Voice Pazz & Jop Top 10 lists in 2008. His song “Too Lazy to Break Your Heart” topped SoundClick’s rock chart that year. He played lead guitar on Kai Wingenfelder’s album Home, recorded in Chiang Mai, and has collaborated with Keo Carabao and La Sabrosa Sabrosura. In Bangkok, he co-founded funk band Lovebone and now plays lead guitar with Midnight Ramblers, a Rolling Stones tribute band.
Joe also produces music for film and television, including Sniper 3 (2004), The Last Executioner (2014), The Attic (2017), and Thai Cave Rescue (2019). He composed and performed “Liquor & Larb” (ลาบหลู้เหล้า) for CNN’s Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown (Chiang Mai episode).
