Maiko
Contemporary Calligraphy Artist
Maiko began her calligraphy journey at the age of 5. Over the past 29 years, she has honed her craft, earning numerous awards and recognition for her artistry. At just 17, she obtained a calligraphy teaching license, inspiring and guiding young artists across Japan.
Her artistic footprint spans several countries, with solo exhibitions in Japan, South Korea, and Thailand. She has performed live internationally as part of the art collective hechyeomoyeo and is currently planning another solo exhibition in Thailand. Beyond traditional calligraphy, Maiko creates paper dresses, designs kimonos, and transforms walls into canvases of written art.
Challenging societal norms, Maiko performs calligraphy while wearing full-face sunglasses to address “lookism,” redefining performance art through her striking message.
Maiko’s art stems from her belief that life’s hardships—sadness, loneliness, and pain—enhance the beauty of happiness. Having endured harassment during her academic and professional life, she channels her experiences into a profound desire for a world where joy prevails over suffering. Each creation carries a “blessing of happiness,” encouraging viewers to rediscover their inner bliss.
Her works explore universal themes of life, love, and the human experience, resonating deeply with audiences. Through her art, Maiko inspires a journey of healing and self-discovery, making her an influential force in contemporary calligraphy.
