Suwat Boontam
Contemporary Artist

Suwat Boontam is a Thai contemporary artist whose work bridges painting and sculpture through intricately carved monochrome cityscapes.

Raised in an agricultural family in Thailand’s Isaan region, Suwat’s early experiences working the land profoundly shaped his artistic philosophy. The act of tracing lines into soil, planting seeds, and cultivating growth later transformed into a visual language in which each canvas becomes a field to cultivate layered, worked, and continuously evolving.

Initially inspired by dreams of distant metropolitan landscapes glimpsed in films and photographs, Suwat pursued formal art education before developing a distinctive technique of carving into wood panels.

His signature black-and-white works are created through a subtractive process using nails, knives, and chisels—tools that lend his practice a sculptural dimension. What began as an improvised method evolved into a highly controlled technique, positioning him between painter and sculptor.

His compositions depict vast, imaginary urban environments rendered with geometric precision.

Devoid of human presence, these architectural landscapes appear suspended between construction and ruin, abstraction and representation. Influenced by Brutalist architecture, Surrealism, Cubism, Constructivism, and lithographic traditions, his cities evoke both modern ambition and existential solitude.

Suwat’s works have been widely recognized in Thailand, with multiple selections in the National Art Exhibition, the Panasonic Contemporary Painting Competition, and the Amata Art Award.

In 2010, he received the PTT Excellent Art Award for The Highest Dream and the Panasonic Contemporary Art Encouragement Award.

Through perpetually unfinished, evolving cityscapes, Suwat Boontam seeks to restore a sense of sacredness to modern life.

His imagined architectures become projections of an ever-changing inner world landscapes in flux, mirroring both personal and collective transformation.
